An association to support the development of open standards for metaverse technology is set to get launched by Meta, Microsoft, and 31 additional businesses.
The organization, known as the Metaverse Standards Forum, will concentrate on creating standards to make all the online metaverses compatible, eventually allowing these worlds to connect.
Even if the metaverse is an ill-defined concept that each company understands and creates according to its own desires, some people think it is essential to connect these various realms.
This is why Meta, Microsoft, and other companies, such as Epic Games, developed the Metaverse Standards Forum, a body created to promote the interoperability of various metaverses.
The body will concentrate on practical, action-based projects like execution prototyping, hackathons, plugfests, and open-source tooling to speed up the testing and acceptance of metaverse standards while also creating uniform jargon and implementation regulations, according to the launch PR statement.
The forum won’t develop norms on its own. The company will be a focal point for the fusion of many Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) in disciplines such as virtual reality (VR), graphics, and interfaces, among others.
Some see the creation of this group as evidence that major companies concur on the value of creating open standards for the concept of the metaverse.
According to Neil Trevett, president of Khronos, a group member organization, the metaverse will bring together various technologies, necessitating a constellation of interoperability standards that must be developed and upheld by numerous standards groups.
There are several well-known individuals who have not joined the group, despite the fact that the organization claims to be open and accessible to all interested parties.
The event is still without Apple, one of the top IT corporations in the world with an interest in VR and AR (augmented reality) technology.
Given the variety of companies building platforms specifically for it, standardizing the metaverse, or the collection of worlds that make up the metaverse, will be a challenging task, according to some specialists, even with an organization advocating norms on the topic.
