The Gen Z HackFest aimed to connect Gen Z’s in tech on a large scale, recently held its annual event in Lagos. The four-day event saw the first three days, 1st-3rd of July 2022 go down for a hackathon while a conference followed on Monday, July 11, 2022.
The event is a gathering of ambitious Gen Z’s who have converged to put their creative and coding skills to test, build solutions to problems in Africa and showcase what they can do.
According to the organizers, the mission of the annual event is to connect thousands of GenZ Techies in Africa to share ideas, collaborate and also connect GenZ Techies to opportunities and expose them to the latest development in the technology ecosystem.
“We are set to achieve this through events that feature workshops, talks, seminars, awareness, thus giving opportunities and empowerment to GenZ Techies.”
Various technology platforms came together to make the Gen Z HackFest events possible, and notably one of them was Filecoin, a decentralized data storage network. The Filecoin network in Nigeria is conveyed by the Orbit Community led by Chukwuemeka Enoch Mbaebie.
The highlight of the 3-day hackathon saw the emergence of Michael Amadi, Dahunsi Samuel and Fasina Ayomikun as winners. The trio developed ‘FUNDSLUMS’, a project that is making charity accessible to any and everybody, the needy and the generous alike.
The FUNDSLUMS project leverages blockchain technology via the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) to secure and store data.
According to the trio, the project will solve the challenge of bordered transaction restrictions, shady intermediaries and representatives when individuals and organizations want to make donations to charity.
Making a reference to some of these challenges, Michael Amadi said, “After some of these experiences I discovered I could solve these issues using the transparency, security and the freedom offered by the blockchain.”
Further explaining Michael mentioned that the project will allow users set up a go fund me that is 100% censorship-resistant and secured with blockchain technology and IPFS.
“No centralized cloud storage used. Even if our website is down, anyone can build one using our contract address and ABI and recover the state of all charities in our contract as it is in real-time. You don’t have to trust us or any intermediary. We can deploy this on FLEEK IPFS hosting service to further decentralize everything.”
The last day of the event had speakers from different platforms speak on creativity and how to enhance it for building solutions to solve Africa’s challenges.
The Filecoin network, represented by Chukwuemeka as mentioned earlier, was part of the judges for the Gen Z HackFest hackathon and also led a discussion on IPFS/Filecoin.
